Fraudscape

Designing the digital home of the UK’s fraud landscape

Fraudscape is Cifas’ flagship annual intelligence report, exploring fraud trends across the UK. I design and build its digital experience, turning complex data and research into something clear, engaging and easy to explore

Turn a report into an experience

Fraudscape brings together a huge amount of data, analysis and expert intelligence about the changing nature of fraud in the UK. My role was to give that information a digital experience of its own, balancing the authority of a flagship industry report with something more visual, accessible and engaging to explore.

A lot of intelligence.
Very different ways into it

Before the website, Fraudscape was published as a traditional report (PDF) and distributed to press and industry. Moving it online meant rethinking how a huge amount of data, analysis and expert insight could work as an experience, giving people quick access to the headline findings while still making room for the detail behind them.

Fraudscape contains a huge amount of findings, trends and analysis. Moving beyond the PDF meant finding ways to surface what mattered without losing the detail behind it.

Some visitors want the headline findings in minutes. Others need to dig into individual fraud types, statistics and supporting analysis.

Taking Fraudscape online created opportunities for interaction, motion, and richer ways to communicate the intelligence that a static document couldn’t offer.

Finding the signal in the noise

I built the experience to bring the most important findings to the surface. Strong hierarchy, data visualisation, illustration and motion help people find what matters quickly, with clear ways to dig deeper into the intelligence behind it.

Turning complex intelligence into an  experience

I designed and built Fraudscape as an interactive intelligence report, transforming traditional PDFs into a more engaging digital experience. From creative direction and information architecture to data visualisation, custom illustrations and interactions, I created a cohesive website that makes complex findings easier to discover, understand and explore.

Giving the intelligence a visual language

Fraudscape needed to feel engaging without distracting from the intelligence itself. I developed a visual and interaction language that pairs Swiss-grid discipline with a cyberpunk-inflected illustration style, combining technical linework, wireframe grids and halftone diagrams with the raw, unpolished edge of brutalist web design. It gave the experience its own character while helping people navigate a large amount of information.

That language carried through to the smallest details. Distinctive buttons, structural grids, registration marks and animated cues signal where there’s more to explore, while a custom illustration library, built around scanning-grid perspectives and technical annotation, turns complex fraud themes into clear, recognisable visual moments.

Bringing the brand into motion

Cifas’ triangular forms became a recurring part of the experience, woven into backgrounds and compositions rather than simply applied as decoration. I used them to frame content, create depth and give the site a stronger connection back to the wider Cifas identity.

Subtle animation brings elements to life. Layers shift, triangles subtly rotate and interface details reveal progressively, adding atmosphere and energy without competing with the data on the page.

Making more feel like less

As Fraudscape grew, so did the intelligence it needed to communicate. What began as an animated text-heavy report evolved into a more modular, bento-style experience, bringing key findings forward while keeping deeper analysis accessible through videos and on-demand content.

Each edition also offered an opportunity to evolve the visual direction. While retaining the core identity, I experimented with different styles, from glass surfaces and soft blurs to this year’s more technical editorial approach, blending Swiss-grid structure, cyberpunk-inspired illustration and elements of brutalist web design.

Six years and still evolving

Fraudscape is one of the longest-running projects in my portfolio. I first worked with Cifas on it in 2020, and since then it’s become a project I return to every year, designing, building and evolving the experience alongside each new edition.

That continuity has given me the freedom to experiment in a way that’s quite rare. Each year is a chance to try a new visual direction, rethink how the intelligence is presented and build on what worked before. Six years later, it still feels fresh, and it’s a project I genuinely look forward to coming back to.
